ALTHEA AND DONNA

UPTOWN TOP RANKING

* * * /

1978 - Frontline - studio - discs: 1

Althea (Forrest) and Donna (Reid) passed through the Reggae history as fast as a comet but this remains a great statement of Reggae made by women. This is very straight and simple Reggae, no sophistications here. Pure 70's sound. The set was recorded at Dynamic Studios and Compass Point Studios and was produced and engineered by Karl Pitterson. The supporting band is a first class group of musicians and between them there are Sly & Robbie, "Chinna" Smith and Tommy McCook (trombone). The title track "Uptown Top Ranking" is one of the nicest Reggae songs ever recorded by female artists and became a hit immediately. Stellar! This gem is based on the stellar Alton Ellis " I'm Still In Love", originally cut in 1967. Talking about the lyrichs of this album, beside a couple of lovers cuts, there is a militant and sometime Rastafari spiritual attitude too. Check for a goose flesh live version on "One Love Peace Concert" DVD.
